Vet care is measured in thousands, not hundreds. Health documentation requirements — Coggins tests, health certificates, brand inspections — are mandatory for any transport. Most rescue software doesn't know any of this.

The Coggins Test Problem

A Coggins test (equine infectious anemia test) is required for horse transport across nearly every state line and at most equine events. The test is valid for 6 or 12 months depending on the state. For a rescue moving horses from high-intake Southern states to homes in the Northeast, managing Coggins expiration dates across a roster of 20–30 horses in transit is a serious operational challenge. Good equine rescue software tracks Coggins test dates with automated expiration reminders.

Large-Animal Transport Logistics

Horse transport requires a licensed hauler or a volunteer with a suitable trailer and tow vehicle, load limits calculated per horse, rest stops for trips over 8 hours, and health certificates in addition to Coggins documentation.

Farrier and Hoof Care Scheduling

Horses need farrier care every 6–8 weeks. For a rescue with 15 horses in five different foster locations, tracking which horses are on a farrier schedule, when they're due, and whether the cost is covered by the rescue or the foster is non-trivial.

Foster Home Requirements Are Different

Fostering a horse requires appropriate fencing, shelter, pasture acreage (minimum 2–5 acres per horse), water access, and often existing equine experience. Your rescue management system needs to track property type, acreage, fencing type, and what size/temperament horses a foster can handle.
