If you're coordinating a network of rescue organizations and using software built for a single shelter, you're not using the wrong features — you're using the wrong tool entirely. Single-org rescue software is built around a single database owned by a single organization. A rescue network has a fundamentally different data model.
The Fundamental Architectural Difference
In a rescue network: animals move between organizations, foster homes may be affiliated with multiple orgs, volunteers may serve multiple partner organizations in different roles, and adoption applications may need to be visible across multiple orgs. This isn't a feature gap. It's an architectural gap. You can't solve it by buying more seats in a single-org tool.
Where Single-Org Tools Break Down for Networks
Animal transfers: In single-org software, transferring an animal usually means manually exporting the record, sending it via email, and hoping the receiving org imports it correctly. Medical records, photos, and behavioral notes often don't survive the transfer.
Foster sharing: Single-org tools have no concept of a foster home that belongs to the network rather than a specific org. If Org A has foster capacity that Org B needs, there's no mechanism for that match inside the software.
Transport coordination: Transport runs in single-org software are typically handled in the notes field or not tracked at all. For a network running coordinated multi-leg transports with five drivers and three handoff points, this doesn't work.
Network-level reporting: If you need to report on outcomes across all partner organizations, single-org software can't give you that. You're aggregating spreadsheets from five different accounts.
What Network-Specific Software Looks Like
A purpose-built rescue network platform — a PRM — handles the architecture differently from the ground up: animals have a network-level record that persists as they transfer between partner orgs, foster profiles exist at the network level, transport runs are first-class objects in the system, and reporting is available at both the org level and the network level.
